RCAF Helcopter Crashes of the coast of Greece

A first victim was found and identified as sub lieutenant Abigail Cowbrough from Nova Scotia.
On Thursday afternoon, the Canadian Armed Forces also confirmed the identities of the five missing crew members:
Capt. Brenden Ian MacDonald from New Glasgow, N.S.
Capt. Kevin Hagen from Nanaimo, B.C.
Capt. Maxime Miron-Morin, from Trois-Rivieres, Que.
Sub-Lt. Matthew Pyke from Truro, N.S.
Master Corp. Matthew Cousins from Guelph, Ont.

How desperately sad for the fine folks of Nova Scotia. What did they ever do to deserve this calamity on top of everything else?

What is worrying is that there apparently was no distress call (though, as usual, the reporters were not asking the right questions at the briefings)so the failure must have been catastrophic. We should have the answer soon from the FDR.
There is a report of flares being seen after the event. Who or what would have fired them off.
