So how many B-747 pax carriers would then remain? I can only think of BA, KoreanAir, and Lufty plus maybe Asiana.

Every 788 that replaces a 744 delivers a potential 128 pax to the competition. Emirates, with their fleet of A380s must be delighted!

First they are replacing the 747's with 789's not 788's. With the struggles Emirates are having at the present time (parking 45 aircraft for eg), I think taking extra pax is furthest from Emirates mind.
Also, fuel burn on the 789 is much better than the A380 (some specs have it 13.5 tons/hr fuel burn for A380 and 7.3 tons/hr fuel burn on 789) so in theory, 2 789's could fly the A380 route, carry more pax (if they went the 400 pax per aircraft) and only burn a bit more fuel..in theory.

I’m not sure Qantas cares. The cost of operating and maintaining the 787 is lower than that of the 747, and as long as the flights are full, they’ll make money. Revenue may decline, but profit should go up.
