Union Organization rejected at S. Carolina Boeing Plant

Aggiunto

Boeing Co handily defeated a union drive by workers at the company’s aircraft factory in South Carolina on Wednesday, as almost three-quarters of workers at the plant who voted rejected union representation. The secret ballot vote, conducted by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) at polling locations throughout the North Charleston plant, was the first for Boeing and a high-profile test for organized labor in the nation’s most strongly anti-union state. The NLRB said 74 percent of the… (www.bloomberg.com) Altro...

It's pretty simple. An overwhelming majority of the workers would rather work for Boeing than the IAMAW. Unions certainly have their place but it will be hard to overcome the Detroit syndrome.

Here in the South, it's interesting to see that it remains largely non-union. I wonder why the dichotomy between here and Northern states...?

A couple of things come to mind.

First, as with the British success in the Malayan Emergency by addressing the problems that faced the populace separated the population from the insurgents. Wages, benefits, working conditions offered by Boeing could satisfy the employees needs well enough to offset Union attraction.

Second is that little disagreement in the middle of the century before last may continue to leave a somewhat of jaundiced view of anything called 'Union'.

It could have to do with the meetings and $485,560 spent against the Machinists.

How much do you think the union spent? More, I'd wager. When the union stewardship no longer represents the dues paying member, and the dues paying member gets it, things change, "to wit" the last couple of national elections. And the losers appear quite the gracious American patriotic mob for their failure. Boeing built that plant in the right place. I think AB put theirs in Mobile AL. Maybe just a coincidence. But it ain't in Detroit!

Union spent somewhat less.
From the article:

Boeing and a pro-business group flooded the Charleston airwaves in the weeks before the vote, outspending the union by an estimated $485,560 to $18,750, according to data from advertising tracker Kantar Media/CMAG. At least 1,780 anti-union television ad spots were broadcast, compared with 118 for the Machinists.

The IAMAW has deeper pockets that that. If that is in fact what they spent then they had little faith in the outcome.

Then one might conjecture that the union side was grossly underfunded because the more prescient union officials elected ,financially, to persue a more likely winnable cause. Whatever that is.
"Second is that little disagreement in the middle of the century before last may continue to leave a somewhat of jaundiced view of anything called 'Union'".
Although crudely stated , it is accurate.

Good job and well done to all the workers at the Boeing plant in S.C. The Obama admin. tried more than once to muscle in down there, trying to force Boeing to move back to the union controlled Seattle plant. The fact that the vote soundly defeated the union push is testament to the fact that unions have little place here in the south. Keep the unions up north and out west where they will die on the vine. The workers in Charleston may not realize it right now but they are writing a new chapter in the Boeing history book that may inspire other Mfg. companies to follow.
