Everyone professional. Wish they could come with a different word than "soul".

"Souls" will go away when the PC Language Police decide it is a term that can be associated with religion therefore is unjustly including non-believers.

Walk-on cargo excludes flight crew and deadheaders.
Cattle hides that walk-on cargo are handled like sheep.
Bodies would have to include any remains in the cargo hold.
People might work.

It is jargon, but is a commonly accepted term that is concise and instantly understood in the environment.

I read once that aviation use of "soul" was a carryover of maritime use, coined in the 1800's. "SOS" save our souls. Since only living humans have souls this gives first responders a heads-up as to the number to rescue and not to worry about the one in a box in the hold. 8-)

Actually the SOS was originally a German distress thing (...---...) from the early 1900s as a single transmission without break between the dots and dashes. It was broken to SOS from the Morse Code after it became the International distress signal. Each language had their own mnemonic, English obviously Save our Souls although I was taught as a naval officer Save our Ship...and two or three more obscene versions.

Easy to understand and quick nothing more and has been part of airplane talk from the start. Have been asked the same during flight following due to weather several times. Very well handled I might add straight forward by ATC and tower having the gaps cut out helped understand things much better.
