Inmarsat to provide free tracking service after missing MH370
Inmarsat (ISA.L), the firm whose satellites helped track the final route of missing Malaysian Airlines airliner MH370, confirmed that it would offer a free, basic tracking service to passenger airlines globally. The company said on Monday that the service would be offered to all 11,000 commercial passenger aircraft which are already equipped with Inmarsat satellite connection, comprising virtually 100 percent of the world's long haul commercial fleet. A lil bit late doncha think. I mean First Air (see squawk) already has the technology installed - oh yeah - using Iridium.
Free is good!
I worry that the "investigators" in the MH370 case could not find a wounded bear in a shanty with Luminal and a bloodhound. If my phone can locate me on the planet within 2 meters or less, there is no excuse a triple 7 with several hundred souls should go missing.
It amazes me that Amazon and Apple know where I am and what I am interested in, while flight data and cockpit voices are only recorded onboard like it was the 1960's. JPL is tracking spacecraft on another planet, and others at the edge of the solar system with incredible precision. Perhaps the governments could toss them a budget to bring commercial aviation inline with what is possible today.
This would certainly add comfort to the grave human suffering that comes with aviation disasters.

It wasn't all that long ago that ATC was using tube radio transmitters. As much as we are lured into believing the govt is up-to-date, this proves it isn't.

" ... He said the use of Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Contract (ADS-C) through the Inmarsat network could be offered “responsibly, quickly and at little or no cost to the industry,” and that it would address some of the issues that led to the still-unsolved disappearance of Flight MH370. Inmarsat said that “leading aviation safety partners” had already bought into the proposal.
It has also proposed what it calls a “black box in the cloud,” which could stream historic and real-time flight data recorder and voice recorder information to aviation regulators or safety authorities, if required. This would not be full time, but would see data uploads automatically start in the event of a range of “trigger events” such as an unapproved course deviation, or a sudden change in altitude. ... "
