Loud Bang Causes Qantas Pilot to Shut Down Engine; Return to Airport.

Approximately 10 minutes after takeoff, the pilot of Qantas flight QF2, manually shut down one of the engines aboard the 747-400, after hearing a loud bang and excessive shuddering coming from one of the engines. The flight, on route from Bankok to Sydney, has safely returned to the airport and is being worked on by engineers. There were 356 passengers on board, and is expected to be delayed 24 hours. There is nothing more frightening than the loss of 1 of 4 engines at approximately 10,000 feet and 250KIAS. No wonder all the captains have gray hair.

They have both RR and GE engines

The ones in the photo appear to be GE CF6-80C2s. It doesn't say if they were getting an excessive vibration warning in the cockpit. If so, I'm with the damaged blades due to ingestion theory...

What engines do Quantas use on their 744s? They had a bit of a problem with RR engines on the A380.
