Lockheed P-38 Lightning (N25Y)
Comments
looks like different tubro's than what I'm used to seeing
Which theatre was she used in?
John - the P38 Lightning was very active in both European and Pacific Theaters of WWII.
These plane's are not seen very much.Good Shot
Great pic! Love seeing a Lightning in the air. Nice view of those sleek early-model cowlings.
Isn't there more smoke coming out the the exhaust that you usually see? What would cause that? Humidity?
One of my college friends Jeff Ethell, was killed while flying a P-38, which was, ironically, painted like his father's WWII P-38 (Erving Ethell) who achieved ace status in North Africa. Jeff was an aviation historian and compiled some great books with original kodachrome photographs (color, no less!) with accounts from the participants.
leery1 - I am guessing no turbos installed for reliability.
Great photo. It was one of my favorite planes - it was so unique. As a kid I had several models of it that I built hanging from the ceiling of my bedroom.
That's Lefty's old White lighting #13.
I liked the old paint better.
Still a pretty plane.
I think the smoke must be for a airshow?

If someone is interested in buying pictures of White Lighting when it crashed, I have them, plane was in our hanger at Stinson Field San Antonio, Tx.for abuot 7 months before it was bought by Red Bull. My phone is 210 316 3347 if anyone has question About this historic plane when owned by Lefty Gardnerin Austin,Tx.
Leery1 Please correct me if I'm wrong but didn't they have a GE Supercharger rather than a Turbocharger?
@Benjamin Taub / @dubjohn:
Thats right, the smoke is for viewing/show effects at an airshow.
I think it's like other smoke-equipment just oil or wax set into the exhaust...

Have some 20 year old photos of this plane when it was painted white and flown by Lefty in Burnet, Texas, where it was based for years. Will post them later when I can find them. Very happy Red Bull got her flying again.
Whether you want to see N25Y when Lefty Gardner flew White Lightnin' or watch N25Y fly over the Danube River in Budapest, please see my PlayList for the best of the P-38 videos. Enjoy: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL6CAAFD779081913F

White Lightnin' was severely damaged in a crash landing following an engine fire on a transit flight and was bought and restored with a brilliant polished aluminum finish by the company that owns Red Bull. The aircraft is now located in Austria.
The P-38 was unusually quiet for a fighter, since the exhaust was muffled by the turbo-superchargers.
