McDonnell Douglas DC-10 (N12061) - There's been some recent discussions about United's livery change and that the last vestiges of the Continental identity are being removed so I thought I'd get this out of the archives, plus it's a classic aircraft - can we call a 1960s designed tri-jet a classic now?br /br /This was taken in November 1981 when Tullamarine had an extensive open observation deck.

One of the best and hardest rocking of all time - can only imagine what it was like touring with them.

Fond memories of my favorite airline, in the days of Gordon that is...

The proud bird with the golden tail, er, the loud bird with the brass ass. Thanks for sharing a great photo.

Was in Colorado Springs about 1970 when Douglas brought the DC-10 in for several days of high altitude airfield tests. Didn't fly on one until 1977, New Orleans through Houston to Las Vegas. Also flew one from Honolulu to Los Angeles in 1984. Recall it as very spacious and comfortable. Some of us remember how flying used to be.

Yes, indeed. In the '80s I'd catch continental DC-10 in Denver Stapleton for the hop over the pond to LGW Gatwick. If memory serves, the flight originated in CNS Cairns, then HNL Honolulu, DEN, LGN and terminated in FRA Frankfurt. Turned it around and back the other way. Racked up a lot of One-Pass miles on that route. It was a great airplane, always on time and the cabin crew was first-rate. Back in the day, eh? Hope I got the codes right, and boy, do I miss the service and comfort. Thanks for sharing a great photo and memory.

Great shot. And whose tail is that we're seeing at the far right of the frame?

To all who have commented, I'm glad to bring back memories of better flying days although I think from reading mags and comments that some US airlines seem to have really pulled back on customer service. I don't fly very much but recently flew Jetstar BRI to ADL and they were great, ground and air. We've also had good experience with Qantas domestic. Haven't flown Virgin in quite a while, but they were good back then. Never flew Tigerair. From my experience at least, I think Oz airlines aren't too bad. Stand by for the arguments!

John Doe: that'll be ZK-NZS. Could be an upload in due course:)

Well, we know for sure that it is not ZK-NZP at the far right of frame, because she was lost on Mount Erebus just 2 years before this photo was taken. RIP.

The red logo was started in 1984.
