I've witnessed a weather balloon release just once. Said balloon was larger than I expected.

Cliff, I just found out that when there are bad storms or hurricanes, the balloons get released every 4-6 hours instead of 12 to have a more accurate view of winds aloft and pressures to forecast the track of a storm.

Thanks, Sam... I didn't know that!!! The weather balloon launch I remember seeing was at KJAN years ago when I was visiting the airport fire station. The balloon launching site was right next to it... :-)
