Interesting looking airplane. I'm glad that Convair was mentioned, because it looks a bit like the 580, except for the rear entry. It is almost a hybrid of a 580 and the early 727. Great looking plane no matter what. First time I have seen one by Martin.

Alan... the Martin 4-0-4 was a direct competitor to the Convair 240, 340, and 440 series. Both the Martin and those Convair types were powered by the P&W R-2800 family of radial engines. Due to an early contract dispute and legal entanglement, the Martin airliner was produced in far fewer numbers than the Convair aircraft. A total of 103 Martin 4-0-4 were built as compared to 1,181 of the Convair 240-340-440 family.
