FAA orders a halt to evictions of aviation companies at embattled Santa Monica airport

So the FAA does have a spine after all. Let's see how far they are going to go to protect aviation in that area.

The City of Santa Monica will ignore them. The city attorney has warned the city council in the past that their course was likely to be unsuccessful, but the council is hell-bent on getting rid of the airport, regardless of the legality and economic consequences.

The City of Santa Monica topped its bi-monthly newsletter Nov-Dec 2016 Seascape with an article on the history and future of the airport from the city's perspective. It also provides the status on the 5 priority strategic goals of the city. #1 is maintaining an inclusive and diverse community, #3 is closing the airport. (#4 addresses the homeless)
If interested, you can read it here:

Why do they hate the airport so much? It creates jobs and brings considerable income to the community. On another article there was only a handful of people making a ton of noise abatement complaints.

Commercial real estate goes for about $550/ft^2 in Santa Monica, and it's not like new land is being manufactured. Developers and speculators there have billions of reasons to want to raze the airport and gain 215 acres (over 9 million square feet) of land. I suspect that's really the prime motivator: money.

The rest looks like noise. The most cogent complaints mostly seem to center around vague "safety" concerns, but with no real analysis of the supposed problems or possible mitigation.

In a parallel squawk on new air service, I posted a link to the City's bi-monthly newsletter. In that they laid out the plans for park space for the airport. Looks quite nice, but I wonder how long that plan will last if and when it does close. They just swore in the new mayor. A part time position, his day job is in condo sales.
carlsonj
No kidding. Condos. What a surprise.

One of the reasons it's probably disliked is precisely because it creates jobs and economic benefits - perhaps if it was instead said that the airport generated welfare and was a designated sanctuary area the average citizen of Santa Monica would love the airport wholeheartedly.

Another is the developers who rent the pols want to tear up the 'tarmac' for condo projects including at most 3 token 'affordable housing' units.

I foresee Trump appointments to run the FAA as very pro-business and Santa Monica will quickly find federal funds absent, and a judge ordering them stop using pretext to force changes at the airport that makes it unattractive to aviation, like fool-hardy fuels (bio anything or unleaded only) and lack of pilot training.

At best the City could be ordered to divest itself from the airport and a nonprofit be appointed to run the facility as an airport for 99 years.

If the city resists the FAA needs to seize the airport using eminent domain. Should be easy as is is a listed alternate for LAX.

Any removal from office would be a State issue, btu the Feds can seize it, rent facilities to the FOB's and appoint a private Management. It can all be put on hold once the E.D. is filed and if they defy that, then the city and its agents can be held for contempt. I doubt Governor Moonbeam will act.

From the Peoples Republic of Santa Monica (PRSM) 'Santa Monica officials say they are working in “good faith” to provide the services and fuel required by federal regulations.'
From which version of the NewSpeak dictionary are they taking "good faith"?

Let see if one dark night the dozers don't appear and destroy the runway. Seems that's the mind set down there of the locals. Glad that its NIMBY as cant put up with stupid.
1rupert
One question. How many of these NIMBYS who are worried about this airport lived there BEFORE IT WAS OPENED IN THE 1940? IMHO, those are the only ones who have a legitimate complaint. And I'll bet the number is 0!

We have a similar issue here in Kentucky. Bowman Field was opened in 1921. A AIRPORT THAT WAS OPENED IN 1921 HAS NEARBY RESIDENTS CLAIMING IT'S EXISTENCE HURTS THEIR PROPERTY VALUES!!!???

So far the local NIMBYS have tried to limit Bowman's airport operating hours, limit types and sizes of aircraft who can use the airport, eliminate IFR operations, and most recently keep the FAA from trimming the trees to continue to have safe approach paths!! IMHO the only NIMBYS with a legitimate complaint concerning the operation of Bowman Field are those who lived nearby before 1921.

I think every airport has newly arrived disgruntled neighbors. My local example is the former Mather AFB, KMHR under whose approach I live. It's 10 miles and in the next county. NIMBYs in my county are objecting to increases in freight traffic due to the noise. They weren't here when it was a SAC base and don't have the BUFFs and tankers with which to compare. There has been a rendering plant a couple miles SE of the field, having moved there in 1970's to be far from town. Developers built tracts under the flight path and ever closer to the rendering plant. Guess what?

Maybe they should let the people get what they want. Then all the airlines and air service can move out and then they can have the peace and quiet that they want. Then when they want to fly they can have the peace of handling the drive through traffic to LAX for any flights .....

ken young 1
So the City officials want to de-privatize a perfectly good working system in the hopes of shutting down the airport. And why? Because a few over the top boisterous NIMBY's have it in their tiny minds that suddenly Santa Monica Airport is creating a grave danger ( is there any other kind?) to the public.
Or...is this a ploy on the part of the city leaders to close the airport then parcel up the land and sell it off to developers. Imagining many cities in CA are buried in debt due to poor fiscal planning AND pension obligations to retired public employees, it is very possible the City needs the cash generated by any sale

I agree with 'Wilbur' (we know who you are, that's OK). The noise of a DC3 or -6 was surely louder than what the local residents are hearing now. None of the current residents were there then, anyway, I'll bet. I'll repeat what I said a few months ago. There will never be a new airport built in California, ever. Do your best to save what you have. Even if, for some reason, you were to propose a new airport in,say, Barstow, there is some endangered tortise to be saved and we'll all be dead before the permits are approved.
jdriskell
Instead of Barstow, why not rehab Daggett?
dee9bee
dee9bee 1
My sectional is a bit old, but it says Barstow-Daggett. I haven't been to that airport since 1979, so I don't know it's condition. Even then, I don't recall it being anything to brag about. For me nowadays, Barstow is a quick stop at Dennys while traveling up or down I 15.

Yea, I was only using KDAG as an example. My point was I don't think anyone can build a new airport ANYWHERE in California anymore. The enviormental obstacles would be enormous. I don't live in Cali anymore and don't care what that they do down there at this point. I now live in SW Utah where we have an almost new airport. I flew to almost every airport in the L.A. basin in the early 70s while building time for my commercial but never to Whiteman or a couple in the 'Inland Empire' I never made it past KBUR for some reason. Later, I was a CFI out of KOXR and went north and west for those $100 hamburgers (then $50, now $500, I suppose)

Lived in Burbank in '59, heard both the birds at MDW and the railroad to the south of it. All that noise did not stunt my growth, bring on maladies, and ruin the property values. In fact, life was good.

I'm probably in a minority on this one. I wish they would go ahead and close the damn thing. That way I no longer need to try to convince my passengers to pick a different airport. Between the nasty grams I get for noise and restrictions on APU usage it just nothing other than a huge pain in my behind.
