CNN.. Even after all these years in every airport and countless incidents and accidents, they are still the most inept news organization right next to the national Enquirer, which I have more respect for as that make know bones about being nothing more than a Tabloid.. I refuse to watch them and their private pilot experts..

Really? Cite five examples of their intentionally inaccurate reporting. That shouldn't be too hard, right?

I can think of five intentionally edited video clips from MSNBC just in the last couple years. I won't even get into all the pathetic reporting by them and the rest of the liberal networks pushing a premise regarding Ferguson that was patently false and proven so. Meanwhile, Fox sat on that and did not report it as fact.

Based on what I'm seeing, it appears you went and copied a set of talking points from some leftist blog.

Ever hear of these things called "links"? They make it easy to go track your source and validate its credibility and objectivity.

SO, perhaps you can use those exact characteristics... "objectivity" and "credibility" and try again.

By the way, Media Matters, Huff-n-Puff Post, and others like them are not objective. "Politifact" is certainly not objective. It's run by the far left Tampa Bay Times.

By the way, millions of people did lose their insurance as did I. We were promised we could keep what we had. Obama lied. We were told cost would go down. I lost my catastrophic coverage for $158 per month and now my best option is $522 per month But at least I have prenatal care! Now, what was the reason they outlawed catastrophic coverage for those over thirty? There is no objective reason to be found.

Yes, please try again.

Oh, one more thing... a guest going on Fox News and making a false statement then it being attributed to Fox News does not constitute a lie. Both Media Matters and Polifact has done this numerous times.

Those organizations are as objective as a convective cell allowing a Skyhawk to pass through safely while tearing up a 747.

Actually, the real story: the plane was flying over Buffalo and s few passengers looked outside and saw the snow on the ground. It was such a shock that they fainted. Typical overreaction!
sparkie624
sparkie624 3
It is stated it was not a pressurization problem, and that is probably true... If it was a structural issue like SWA has had it would have had pictures posted everywhere by now... But somehow they obviously had an issue... One of 2 things probably happened... They lost a Pack or they lost a bleed. At FL410 they cannot pressurize the a/c off of one pack, one engine can not supply 2 packs at that altitude... It says they descended to 28,000 feet... With a Pack or Bleed failure that is what the the max altitude would have been. It is my opinion they they either lost a bleed valve or a pack in flight and thus could not maintain that pressure and had to emergency decent. I think that they could have continued to there destination if it had not created some medical emergencies.
gearup328
sparkie624, you are one of the most trusted persons on this board. Once you're down below 10000 feet the FAA says you're OK. Are you really? A fully pressurized jet will still have you at 8000 feet for the whole flight at FL400. Loss of a pack is critical. Even at FL280, with a loss of pressurization, you have to get down fast. Speed brakes out, flight idle power, 5 minute descent to below 10000 is standard for an emergency descent. Nothing new for my pilot friends.
sparkie624
sparkie624 1
10,000 feet is safe with no problems... you could safely go to 14,000 without o2, but not really recommended. I am not sure why 8000 feet was chosen for a pressurization altitude. As far a single pack ops, the CRJ 700 and above can support 31,000 for single pack ops, most others on single pack only do 28000 feet. I do not think they truly lost all pressurization, or they would have continued down to 10000, they just needed to get down to where they could maintain cabin pressure without O2 supplements.
gearup328
Yep Sparkie, one pack will usually work. Cross bleed from both engines to one pack. However, what if the outflow valve fails in the open position? The system is engineered to be auto controlled and also a manual backup. A structural failure in the outflow valve would negate both these systems. A rapid decompression and a failure to maintain adequate pressure are two different things. The pilots have to evaluate and make the decision. An emergency descent was probably not required but I wasn't there and I can't blame them. Every descent and landing is OK with me. The other event here was some pax were affected. When pax have a medical problem--land and get them attention. Down we go.
sparkie624
sparkie624 1
The reason I ruled that out is that would constitute a pressurization problem and they said clearly that it was not a pressurization problem, and that would have been logged into the fault history of the plane. If that valve had failed closed, then they would have had issues depressurizing during decent, and would have had more PSI differential than allowed. Also the Backup/Manual control they would have still been able to maintain altitude without such a dramatic dive.

Even using both bleeds to one pack, one pack still does not have the volume required to pressurize, they may have had more pressure, but still the same volume of air entering the pressure vessel.
gearup328
sparkie624, you and I have too much common sense. I like your analysis. I believe the pilots over reacted and caused a problem that didn't exist. Every commercial jet has a manual pressurization control and you can simply de-pressurize and land. The only emergency descent required would be from a very high altitude--maybe 25000 and above and we need to get down. However, if a passenger has a medical problem---down we go to the nearest big airport where there will be medical attention. The last thing I ever wanted was to have a passenger die because I delayed in getting down.
sparkie624
sparkie624 1
I agree with you, but the final report said 3 people went unconscious, One thing that could have happened is that they had the Automode to fail and then mis-handled the manual system inducing the problem, I would not rule out crew error in this, and if maintenance signed it off as well as no repeats on this a/c that is very likely. I also agree with you that we do not want to loose passengers in flight... certainly not good for business. :)

I would have liked to have heard the ATC.NET commmunications on this... that may have told us more information as well. When I look up details on this report from the airline FAA reportL "when the crew initiated an emergency descent (average rate of descent 4500fpm) reporting problems with the cabin pressure," By my understanding at that point there were not any PAX issues... If the crew mis-handled the pressurization controls that could have induced the error, or it could have been a computer glitch... We live in a day of computer controlled airplanes.... Sometimes we just have to reboot them like a computer (CTRL/ALT/DEL) :) Once the a/c was powered down and restarted, there was no problem to be found... This happens a lot on the ground, and sometimes in the air.... Just for the record, I do not recommend rebooting the plane while flying... Especially if you are fly by wire :)
gearup328
You would have to be there to know the situation. If the flight attendants panicked (I would have too) and told the Captain, nothing else matters. Get the airplane on the ground. I had a medical emergency on one of my flights and after the rapid descent and landing, the passenger refused attention in the airport and simply walked away. We have no idea what meds our passengers are on. We pilots and flight attendants routinely go through 6 to 8 thousand feet pressure change every day. Some passengers can't take this. Could they have been drinking? Alcohol has a profound affect at altitude. Were they smokers? Medications? The list of prohibited meds for pilots is just awesome. Passengers--anything goes.
Fredbrillo
On the news last evening it was reported that only 3 passengers were affected? Was this true or more inept reporting?
sparkie624
sparkie624 2
I do not really know... Originally it was 1, but revised to 3... That is believable and would be hard to dispute... Even at that, none were taken to the hospital, and were treated in the airport... It does not say if any of those 3 continued their flight that day.

I was just looking up more information on this a/c from the FAA based on the registry information... The A/C was actually "N119SY" which is a "ERJ170-200LR", certified on 9/18/2014, so in my opinion this a/c is not even broken in yet...

According to the FAA report states: "The FAA said the crew initiated an emergency descent reporting the loss of cabin pressure. In a following maintenance examination of the occurrence aircraft no evidence of a loss of cabin pressure and no indications of anything else amiss with the aircraft were found." .. With that in mind, this entire incident could have been a computer or software glitch.
pappyroehrer
get it right or get it first? has been the question ever since the telegraph...information traveling faster than the ability to verify.
since its a known problem and has been for eons, why keep acting surprised?
the only thing that would prevent or reduce it is monetary penalties.
obvious why we don't / can't do that every time!
robmark
This also happens because media outlets don't want to pay for aviation expert reporters, so they grab what they can when they need them and hope for the best.
mhlansdell00
I can only guess that the closer we get to election day 2016 the worse rhetoric like this will become. Are any of these "comments" germane to the Skywest article? George Bush , either one flew fighter planes not an E-175.
KennyFlys
Ken Lane 1
If one makes a blatantly false comment regarding the performance of an aircraft, airline or pilot's actions, should we let that go or challenge it?

Why should it be any different with any other comment made? You either hold people to a higher standard or you accept as fact every piece of BS stated. I'm not one to do the latter.
mhlansdell00
I'm not sure how that fits in with the competence of Fox News, George Bush, Dick Chaney,... Sparkie and you stayed on topic but the wild comments of some others are a waste of space an time to pick through.Case in point, the laundry list provided by Randy Marco about 10 entries down. My point is that the site is for aviation topics, although CNN does sem to take liberties with story facts on occasion,

Pressure Loss Forces Jet's Emergency Landing in NY

A SkyWest jet made an emergency landing at Buffalo Niagara International Airport today after experiencing an apparent problem with cabin pressure, reports the Buffalo News. SkyWest was operating the flight out of Chicago for United; it was bound for Hartford, Conn. One person reportedly lost consciousness; a SkyWest official says "the flight landed safely in Buffalo, where the passenger received medical attention before being released."

I know you didn't write this drivel, but Hartford is NOT a commercial airline destination. BDL is the closest destination and is about midway between Hartford, CT and Springfield, MA. I flew out of HFD while I was in college there. back in the 60s

Despite all the massively sensationalized headlines, follow up reports indicate the descent was initiated AFTER some passengers "lost consciousness" ... and, inspections showed no indication of any pressurization problem with the aircraft.
Why can't the media get anything right any more?
sparkie624
sparkie624 2
Obviously something happened other than that for them to level off at 28,000 feet.. That is max altitude for one pack.... Keep in mind that no pressurization problem, true, but there are other systems that affect the pressurization system as stated above, and 28,000 would have been the correct altitude for single pack ops.
JetDoc66

Max single pack altitude for the ERJ 170/175 is FL 310.
