I also believe #6 is somewhat vague. My limited airport naming convention education recalls that if an airport's code ends in "X", it's a telltale sign that the airport site began life as a weather station. I'm sure someone here will enlighten me.

Perhaps the PHX designator has something to do with Phoenix ending in an X?

That's what I have always thought also, it makes sense to abbreviate Phoenix with PHX.

There's also PDX for Portland, and LAX for Los Angeles, of course. Both were weather stations.

The first 'fact' is incorrect. ORD overtook ATL in terms of operations. Most enplanements (passenger boardings) still belongs to ATL.
