Short but amazing video and a good reminder to use tie-downs. (www.youtube.com) Altro...

I never thought there would be a need to tie down a 747... Until now.

It's in the bone yard, no engines or other ballast. Good object lesson anyway.

Yes, a real nice subject to plan in such cases.
One method can be to 'clip' the wings before other/any 'weights' are removed !
No, my friend joel wiley ?
PhotoFinish
PhotoFinish 1
It's an empty shell of a 747 with all the lift surfaces and much if the weight removed and salvaged as parts.

Give it enough wind and you've got a great video.

Earlier this week there was another video of a much lighter general aviation plane that actually took off and was then pushed backwards in the wind and crashed back to the ground off-screen.
akayemm
Correct me if wrong dear friend PhotoFinish, isn't it similar to how they check the fuselage in the wind tunnel with substantial equipment ?

God thing for the wind - it has no engines.

I think some are forgetting that huge hump on top of the forward fuselage. It's an airfoil all on its own and has a significant effect on lifting that nose.

The forward fuselage of an F-14 is similar; I I would imagine by design to give it more lift in slower flight given the wings were designed with supersonic in mind.

A more serious issue is where / on what did it "land"?

All VFR, no flight plan needed.

Best short field take-off ever!

Tie down? What's a tie down?
akayemm
May be a long neck tie ! For formal occasions !
ha ha ha

This video is from 2011 and there is another versions on the Internet with better resolution. On that one very thin tie downs are visible that break once it gets up in the air. Therefore the strange motion where it almost lifts off vertically without being blown backwards.

Real hilarious !
But a fact . A serious safety concern.
In stronger winds(like hurricanes), larger aircrafts are as much at risk.
This is just a 'prototype' or scaled down demo .
Great search, my friend Daniel Baker.

Yikes. "Dude, where's my plane?"

Hey, Not only tie down, but make sure the tie down straps are of the highest quality. Weak or frayed straps will break in high winds too. I guarantee it.

When I takeoff in a plane, I usually go... forward.

Relative wind + wing = lift (every time)

Big enough wind, wings aren't an issue. I've seen videos of semi-trucks and houses being picked up and blown away as probably most of us have. We were in a tornado once (fortunately only once) in Chicago in 1965, and watched a huge crab apple tree get pulled up and blown away, in addition to a brick building that housed a boat. I learned a new respect and fear for wind.

WOOOOOOOOOOO

Are creators of wind tunnels getting some inspirations from mother nature ?
;p

Did the insurance cover that?
joelwiley
joel wiley 0
Comprehensive covers wind damage and damage from projectiles.
May depend on the how the adjuster writes it up.
If the Affordable Care Act covers airplanes BaronG58, why won't it cover my dogs?
BaronG58
BaronG58 1
think it will cover dogs. Saw on news a man in Colorado used his dog's name as a password on his application and received a confirmation of policy addressed to his dog.
AWAAlum
AWAAlum 1
You have a rich imagination. A password wouldn't be understood as an email address in the land of computer technology Would it?
joelwiley
joel wiley 1
More likely that the insurance company tapped into the NSA take and picked it up from there. Alternatively they gleaned the dog's name from other cross-referenced information based on his ID and Browser history. Cookies are for more than building ginger-bread houses for Xmas.

You may be on to something Joel! This has the smell of "Snowden" all over it!

Google it! True story..confirmation was sent in mail, address and policy confirmation was in dog,s name. Think it was Fox News who interviewed the dog's owner.

Tried Snopes and it isn't there. So being the good woman I am, I'll believe you - while adding a grain of salt.
BaronG58

Go to Google...type: man's dog signed up for obamacare...Then take grain of salt back....Later

Been there, done that, read that. But I'm one of those doubting thomases, one of those who doesn't always believe everything posted on the internet. And I don't think I'm that unusual, hence Snopes, a website dedicated to debunking urban legends, rumors and misinformation. The dog story may be true - but it just sounds too kooky to me - hence, the grain of salt is still in play.

PS-I can't find where it says he used the dog's name as a "password" but rather typed it in under some of the security questions. But it's a good story and one that's useful to those poor souls caught up in the Obamacare fiasco.

As many issues as that site has it would not surprise me a password was changed to a person's real name.

I remember that story on Fox News I have it on a 32" monitor above my computer's four monitors as I work all day.

I looked into it a bit farther. Baxter was mentioned during a telephone interview, so either Baxter's dad gave the name for the wrong question or the interviewer posted it into the wrong spot on the app. We used to call these data entry errors. It's not limited to the ACA. Try your local insurance company: approval for medical treatments are often determined by lower paid clerical staff rather than health care professions. If that doesn't scare you, stay healthy.

AWAAlum 1
I'll opt for your second choice, regardless. Take 'r easy, Joel.

Healthcare is way off topic so I won't pursue farther.
Although the video could be metaphor for healthcare costs. 8-)

I landed many years ago at the Des Moines airport in Iowa in an Aeronca Champ and was forced to RON because of weather to STP. I made an effort to tie the plane down but had never done it before. During the night there was a heavy thunderstorm and I feared for the plane but when I returned to the airport in the morning it was there and intact. Someone had tied it down correctly and saved my butt. Can I thank that man at this date date?

May have been, but I for one hadn't seen it before. But then I don't hang out on Youtube. So, to me anyway, it was interesting.
akayemm
Me too.
There are SO MANY videos of so many kinds! Is it easy to know what is where without spending hours ? No.
Credit ought to be given to the guy for the 'discovery'.
