No FBO, No fuel... not much airport at KWWD, Cape May, New Jersey
The Atlantic City Press reports on an out-of-the-way airport having become largely out of commission due to the closure of its last FBO and a lack of fuel availability. Unfortunate, to be sure, though airport operator DRBA (the Delaware River and Bay Authority) claims to be on the case, and is pretty good as airport authorities go. It's absolutely amazing how often I'm reading stories like this. I'm sorry, but this is extremely poor education to the airport owner from airport management. Reading the comments made by the Assistant Operations Manager make it very clear that they have absolutely no clue what is going on at their own airport. Management needs to be WAY more proactive at educating the Delaware River & Bay Authority as to what is taking place. It's a practical fact that private FBOs are having an extremely hard time surviving at airport with a smaller amount of traffic. They are dropping like flies left & right, forcing the local municipality to step in and take over. The local municipalities are typically ill-prepared or equipped to undertake such an endeavor, and frankly, it's starting to show around the country. Airport owners need to realize that the airport is a positive public asset and is a huge benefit to the community that more than likely isn't going to make direct money back for the taxpayers. Rather, it is seem in monies spent in the local community as well as sales tax revenues from the people that are brought in.
