Well, like I said in another post somewhere, it's kinda like NASCAR. For the last 5 years, everybody was chasing the 48. The 48 team didn't get worse, the others just got better and caught up and this past year, they got passed. That is the position SWA is in. Over the last several years everybody has trying to emulate SWA in places and have either gotten there or will be there soon. When you are out front and all are chasing you, full speed ahead; when they start catching up and draw abreast, that's when you have to take stock and change things to get back out front. This is what Kelly is trying to say and everybody needs to listen.

I would also add that SWA needs to take a look at some of the markets that some carriers pull out of. Some are not uneconomical; they just don't fit in route plans or whatever.

I think this is overblown. SWA needs to continue to work on its quality and watch its costs. It had a great fuel hedge for a while which helped, but that has since been used up. Its biggest advantage is its culture which is the number one problem at the legacy airlines. American certainly is not going to turn that aspect around given the failure to alter the top management, merely rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. This bankruptcy really just kicks the can down the road with a little less weight in the can but the same lousy kickers.

United and Continental are trying to absorb two semi co-equal cultures pretty much like the Catholics and the Protestants in Ireland, but with 30% administrative redundancy. It will be at least ten years and lots of management attrition to do this. They are going to need to thin the ranks. Operationally, I suspect Denver and Cleveland will become the new Memphis and Cincinnati.

Southwest are already putting their stamp on AirTran, ditching the WiFi and likely the business class. Saw one of their pilots two weeks back that says company rumors are they will increase international...I can't see it beyond Caribbean, Canada and/or Mexico. Their executives just do not make stupid moves.

I didn't think that United/Continental was that big a player in Memphis????????????

My example was intended to illustrate what happens to busy hubs when airlines merge...Northwest was big there as Delta was in Cinci (and Portland). Both are relative ghost towns now.

Looking at United Continental, Houston and Newark are safe as are ORD and SFO and/or LAX providing the city doesn't try to squeeze them again for their social engineering programs in which case LAX will get boosted. Dulles is probably OK as is Boston. This all adds up to cuts of 30% although inclusion of either LAX or SFO would give more savings.

Yeah, DAL still hasn't made up it's mind what to do at Memphis. They have cut a bunch of schedules and are taking more through ATL, and what they aren't running themselves, ASA is in their colors on long term, full seat contracts. Pinnacle has already moved out a bunch of equipment and announced that layoff the other day. whole thing that puzzles me though is just how much more can ATL take. CIN was a realignment for DAL but the biggest thing was getting away form ComAir. They were the premeir carrier for DAL, but during the DAL bankruptcy, they thumbed their nose at trying to work laid off DAL pilots and as contracts came up for renewal, DAL said bye. ASA was the big beneficiary, as they took up the slack. they are even getting rid of 50 and 70 pax CRJ's and going to the 90pax. Should be pretty close to all there right now. Windows are just to low on all them to suit me as a pax. Have to bend my nec down to far to see out.lol

Were you to book you seatmates on the new social networking reservations website your choice of companion (companions on three across) should provide sufficient distraction to keep the window height problem in the background...LMAO.

Well, until sombody else comes in over there at MEM, at least you'll have clearer skies and runways. That is plumb sad. I heard that there was an expansion due over there by somebody(never heard who) as soon as pinnacle really wound down and gave up some space. I am told that is all coming in the 1st half of 2012 and will be a major competetitor to DAL on East coast traffic, so I don't know if it is somebody new or somebody already there fixing to expand. I also heard there was a major FBO going to come in there, same time frame, with the intent on trying to make a grab for Tunica traffic. Don't know how that will play out. Tunica has about 10 grand and all services don't they?

BoeingFan59
I haven't seen a lot of traffic heading to Tunica lately (or I haven't seen one on Flightaware recently maybe only 2 daily) I was thinking SWA was coming here since AirTran has one plane here and of course it runs MEM-ATL. On the major competetitor note I can only think of SWA..If it's someone else like CO/UA then I'll be shocked.

when you receive your weekly paycheck - who do you pay first ? your creditors or yourself, if it's your creditors - result is what it is, you will never be able to buy anything that will be yours
