The metal is protected that way....it is washed off later

Hey the first domestic customer of the 777X will be......drum roll please.....United Airlines. United postponed their A 350 order by at least 5 years, a nice way to say we won't exercise it as Boeing made a deal they could not refuse. Wait for the announcement later this year from Boeing and United.

Why are so many of the modern airliner fuselage sections coloured green?
mhope100
My uneducated guess, the green is the surface protectant applied to the aluminum. It also can be a release film on the aluminum to protect the surface from damage.

But...not all the sections are green!

Because some are composite.

Zinc chromate primer has been a staple of airframe builders since the 30's. It' an anticorrosive coating typically used under ultra-slick (less drag) top coats such as Dupont Imron.

In the seventies I used it on the inside of my VW beetle mufflers. Before installing a new (steel) muffler, mix some zinc chromate with thinner 50-50, cover with saran wrap all the orifices on the muffler with a rubber band, and turn the muffler in all directions/ attitudes. Uncover and pour out the chromate, filtering it back into the can for further use (turn it in all directions to empty). Install it on the beetle and watch it last five years longer than before. The smell of burned paint for a few days (outside), and it's gone.

Zinc Phosphate now, chromate was probably outlawed by the EPA

Zinc Chromate worked well; is this why it is gone?
Steventexas
Chromate was found to be highly toxic to humans in the form of cancer.
