Air Force One Performs Daytona 500 Flyover

Aggiunto

Just short of President Trump's arrival at the Daytona 500. The president's 747 did a buzz of the speedway at about 800 feet. Amazing spectators before landing at Daytona Airport next door. (www.dailywire.com) Altro...

Guys - let's face it- AF1 is an awesome, inspiring aircraft. And that flyover, planned, but a surprise to the crowd, was amazing. Very cool, looks cool, sounds cool, and taking a lap in the limo was legit.
Let's keep the politics out of it, huh?

Haha, good luck with that. I agree, it was a damn cool moment, but unfortunately the deranged Anti-Trumpers are kicking and screaming and calling this a 'reality' show. Bunch of BS, what a great day though for Daytona and the President!

This posting and the subsequent comments are far too pollical and take away from the real point of the "FLIGHT AWARE"website, which is to discuss aircraft, airlines, issues that come up in that area such as crashes, seats that are too small,737max problems and the like,as wel as things about airline mileage programs, airline policies or yes, even some "heartwarming" passenger stories..AF1 is a beautiful aircraft to watch,as were all of the 747's..like a big whale floating gracefully by..(I saw it once)but it is not a political toy,nor the personal property of the president,no matter who he might be.."nuff said"...

You're the one who seems pretty upset about a flyover that most people enjoyed seeing.
Quirkyfrog
You're paying for it. He's run up more time in Air Force One than any president ever, and it's going back and forth to Florida, mostly, to golf and leak his plans to guests.

So much time, they won't tell how much they have squandered.

Plus they have savaged agency budgets and cut costs almost everywhere, and the deficit is over a trillion dollars. It's skyrocketing, which makes me wonder where all the money is going! It's already reported that he has gotten over $600 million from the secret service in hotel and other fees just to protect him and his family. So it looks like he IS making BILLIONS of dollars. Billions of tax payer dollars.

So flying the plane that costs over 2k a minute to operate so that the goobers at the Daytona 500 can see it is ridiculous. It's a waste of money, and then they post a picture from when George W. Bush flew there. Why? Because the stands were mostly empty! They either lie, or refuse to produce the data of where the money is going, and how much he and his family (Ivanka called AF1 'her plane') has cost. It'll likely be in in the high hundreds of billions of dollars by election day.

And it's all ILLEGAL! The US Constitution explicitly forbids a president to profit from being president. The GOP apparently has either no brains, balls, or backbone, and ignores the gaping black hole in the White House.
alexa320
Yeah, ain’t it funny that one year, those repugs are screaming at the deficit and squanderin* money and calling themselves fiscally responsible. Yet, casually turn a blind eye to all this and trumps total disregard for spending. I mean, WTF?
And how is it ever OK to enrich yourself at taxpayers expense? None of them can even begin to tell you how that is OK. what a hypocritical bunch. Never trust them. Emoluments clause, remember that? We do, they don’t. Simp,e as that. Absolutely disgusting.
WhiteKnight77
There is a big difference between leaving the Daytona 500 and arriving before it happens. Stands will be emptier due to tailgating, the buying of souveniers, etc. Of course the stands will be emptier. smh
RainbowRiver
And it amuses us when the mere word "Trump" causes leftists to began shrieking and screaming, as if the state of the U.S. was disastrous, instead of GRRREAT!!!

No, we're not "triggered". We're just like this.
RainbowRiver
Triggered? Liberals go insane at the mere mention of the word Trump.
RainbowRiver
Well if it's getting far too political (with which I agree), why state the obvious: "Air Force is not the personal property of the President."
blackstock
Alright, it is a beautiful aircraft. I had a chance to be within 50 feet of it and Bush Sr. when Bush came to Colorado in 1992. I've photograph it (the different ones) a few different times in my life. It is one of the most iconic and 'American' symbols in the world. Thus is unique in the fact that it is hard to tease out the aircraft alone when that symbol of American might is being used to ego-stroking purposes.

For example, one can not have a discussion about the proposed paint scheme changes to the VC-25 replacements without also evoking the issues around if it is simply a ego-stroking pet project to make it 'more' American.

Likewise, for example, how can one discuss Enola Gay or Bockscar without mentioning their most famous uses?

Politics aside, that was a heck of a sweet flyover and what a way to make an entrance!
WhiteKnight77
The flyby was cool though I missed it when it happened. That said, it does not matter which photo was used for the article. That AF1 was at Daytona International Airport on the day of the 500 is. The photo of Bush leaving Daytona was after the race had already started. The photo of AF1 landing at Daytona with Trump was prior to the start of the race and as such, the stands would be much emptier. The fans would be in the tri-oval or BBQing or visiting the souvenier trailers in the hours before the race and when Trump flew over and landed. If you had ever been to a race, you would know the stands do not fill up until the green flag falls and even then there are people trickling in.

As far as the flyover, the FAA can grant waivers to professional pilots such as the ones who fly that plane and for lower altitudes. We all know what NOTAMs are and how they are put into effect. There was one for no drones around the speedway, but FoxSports got approval to fly one at the track and was used to take video of The Beast as it circled the track.

As others have said, this isn't the first time and it will not be the last that AF1 does a flyover. If yhou want to bitch about it, then tell your Senators that you do not want any flyovers of any military aircraft at sporting events you enjoy or attend.

I know it was awesome when 4 AH-64 Apaches flew around the track at Atlanta for Richard Petty's last race in 92. I was able to look down into the cockpit as they were not more than 50' above the track surface as they flew a lap around it.
WhiteKnight77
Here is a picture of The Beast just before the race went green.

Apparently those posting here either don’t know, forgot, or were too young to remember, but AF1 w/Pres. Reagan aboard made an appearance in 1984 at the Daytona Firecracker 400.
While on final approach to Daytona Intl Airport, he announced,”gentlemen, start your engines”.
Just prior to touchdown, and still airborne, that beautiful aircraft was caught by an alert photographer with Richard Petty’s car coming down the backstretch in the foreground.
This visit by the POTUS may have been for political reasons, but it generated one of the most historical photos ever taken of AF1!
Petty ended up winning the race, and Reagan shook hands and congratulated him afterwards.

Oh geez, people get a grip.
First, this wasn't a "surprise" flyover as everyone thinks. Track owner and organizers worked this flyover in as part of the pre-race excitement.
Second there is no way President Trump was on board, as the protocols would not allow it. Did anyone see him leave the plane following the flyover? No. That's because he was elsewhere getting ready to arrive, do the Grand Marshall duties and do the parade lap in The Beast.
Jackx9

Totally agree. This isn’t the first time that his political handlers have used AF-1 as a political/campaign prop i.e. behind him at numerous airport rally’s. While I don’t condone his politics and buffoonery, I have no problem with him being there as grand marshall, addressing the crowd and even taking the beast on a presumptive victory lap (I recorded the race so did he and Melania wave to the crowd out of the open rooftop?) But the Top Gun-ish 800’ MSL buzz of the crowd by the symbol, but not the POTUS, was a bit over the top. NOTE: The VC-25 without the POTUS aboard is not ID’d as AF-1 but just as a VC-25 in the executive aircraft fleet.

We Flight Instructors follow and teach 14 CFR 91.119, but it looks like it’s OK for civilian trump to violate Federal Law that states the minimum safe altitude over congested areas is 1000’ above highest obstacle.
NX211
NX211 2
It goes without saying that this rule is in place for very good reason. Flying at 800 feet is not in and of itself dangerous. Pilots do this every day over populated areas on approach. But it is done in controlled airspace where the ground hazards are well known.

However, it seems the political implications have led many of us down a rabbit hole causing us to be distracted from the aviation related questions.

President Trump was not piloting this aircraft. The President ( any President ) cannot issue direct orders to military officers down the chain of command. The President issues orders to the joint chiefs and from there the orders filter down the line.

The issue of if AF1 should be doing fly-bys at all is also beyond the scope of this venue and I will not address it here.

The issue is, Weather or not a flight plan was filed & approved for an 800-foot fly by. And, if so, were the proper safety precautions and planning done?
fireftr
So you think while enroute Trump just blurted out “hey, let’s do a flyover”? AND the top-notch crew replied “good idea, let’s go for it”?!!!
NX211
NX211 2
If you are asking my personal opinion?

No, I don't think this is what happened. I don't understand how you could think so. I clearly stated that the President was not in command of the aircraft. Some above & below implied this and I wanted to point out this is not how the chain of command works for any President.

I think this trip was planned months if not a year in advance. I also think the proper planning and approval for an 800ft fly-by was done and obtained as part of the planning.

However, in spite of my faith in the professionalism in the operators. I think it is completely reasonable to ask if proper permissions & safety reviews were done. This is not a political question.
fireftr
You’re still not sure if a flight plan was filed, but you state arrangements were probably made way in advance!
REALLY??
Make up our minds, ‘cause yours seems to be confused!!!
NX211
NX211 1
Yes.. really.

I am "still" not sure if a flight plan was filed because no one here has shown if it was or was not.

Yes.. I think these arrangements were probably made well in advance. But I don't know this for certain as I have not heard anything from those who did plan the event.

I doubt very much I can make up "our" minds. Yours appear to be dedicated to tolling. Mine just would like to know if a proper safety review was done.

Is there something wrong with asking if the proper steps were taken to ensure the safety of the President and attending public?
WhiteKnight77
You can bet that the plans for the flyover and landing at Daytona were made well in advance. It is just that the flight plans and actual times are kept secret and AF1 is never tracked once a President is on it for security purposes.
fireftr
Apparently you can’t see the forest for the trees!
Your last paragraph contradicts the whole rest of your post. You at first say you feel everything was done in advance-and properly, then you question that exact statement!!!!
MKanzler
It was done in advance and kept secret.
That's reasonable. The people who neded to know where informed, and it was probably limited to just them.

It’s interesting to me that, while so many people enjoy and take a lot of pride in AF1, the president wants to change the paint scheme. I don’t know if it’s really going to happen, but if you look closely at his desk in the Oval Office there is a model of a B747 with a different paint scheme.

Is it time for a new paint job for AF1?
fireftr
I heard he was thinking of red, white and blue to be patriotic.
I hope that never happens, as the current livery is gorgeous, has always been, and should remain the same.
RainbowRiver
They're not going to repaint the current AF-1 There's a new 747 in the works to replace this old one and the new one will possibly have an "updated" paint scheme.
darjr26
darjr26 1
I’m sure you know there are several aircraft involved in transporting the president. There are two 747-200s, 757s, some Gulfstreams, and even a 737, hopefully not a max. I was on AF2 once in the 80’s and it was a DC-9. I wonder if they “update” the paint scheme if they’ll do the entire fleet or just the aircraft on order?

Not sure why you assume everyone who makes a negative comment is "liberal." I certainly am not! However, if you consider that the hourly operating cost of the VC-25A is somewhere btwn $180K to $200K, depending on the source, no administration is doing the taxpayer any favors by using that aircraft for short trips from ADW to Daytona or JFK, etc. It's especially galling when a sitting president uses that airplane to take his wife to NYC on a date to see a Broadway play. Is that official government business? It seems to me to be an egregious waste of tax dollars. The 89th AW has other airplanes more suited to those distances. Alas, they'd have to train the White House pilots to fly them, but that would still be less expensive.
RainbowRiver
So, I presume you also oppose the cost of the Thunderbirds flying over the track that day. I guess we'll have to cancel all flyovers of football games. The Super Bowl folks won't like that.

That you think those people are criminal shows how out of touch people like you are. Why did those flyover" states not vote for Hillary? Reagan was my first Commander in Chief. I had never voted for a Democrat in over half century of life-- until recently. Boy do you underestimate the distaste and disdain some of use have for 'him.' Also along with this, I think you underestimate the determination.

I love a good air show, and even worked a few. Even those flybys you see at major events are well planned as to maximize the time of our military with either a real mission or training mission, thus minimize the tax payer burden. The impact is minimal.

On the other hand, using our military and it's equipment for personal play-toy props when one lacks even a basic understanding of the Constitution and our institutions, is one of the reasons I can't stand the man. It's not because he's more popular, for he's not.

That's not the way the framers envisioned things. For a President to be truly off his rocker he (she, or it) would have to be doing far more than just pissing off the Democrats!

How about the Constitution?
He’s just a POS, I know and the whole world knows it. It’s your choice to be an ostrich.......trump is vile and evil and way out of his depth. You may read but do you know his background and multiple failures befor3 he even became president. You may read but not widely...
KineticRider
trumpf is and has violated the Constitution and no officer should accept orders that contravene the Constitution.

It is in the oath you take but clearly you don't know that!
alexa320
Well said, Marco! That’s the point, these supporters tie themselves in to pretzels trying to defend his vile actions! If he really were that great, why on earth would they have to do that on a daily basis?
The actions should speak for themselves, right?
RainbowRiver
P.S. I was a commissioned officer in the USAF and volunteered for Vietnam. I assure you that I can read just fine. But I don't denigrate people that I don't even know, due to pure political hatred, as do you.
KineticRider
Just because you clueless went you Nam doesn't mean squat!

Yeah well Obama said while leaving office he was about to go to war with North Korea.
At least Trump didn't pull out of Iraq...creating ISIS.
He actually wants our troops to come home.

So we should only put threatening aircraft at sporting events? If you think about it - no matter who is President at the time - af1 is the most dangerous and threatening aircraft in the world.

It's not the first flyover for af1

Bet the Marine Colonel who just lost his Squadron and his wings is wondering WTF. Leadership is set from the top . ie CIC...so hopefully he gets reinstated or AF1 PIC loses his wings.

OK, fine, fly over (this constant promotion of the military is getting really old; we all know we need them and we appreciate their service, but we don't have to make every football, baseball, or racing game about flag-waving). Yes, it's a lovely aircraft, and awesome in flight at that altitude. Woo hoo.

But to link to Breitbart and the far-right wackos flaming everyone they think is too "librul" for their liking, when this is an aviation squawk list, was a bad editorial decision on the part of whoever does the links for FlightAware.

Maybe just stick to the facts next time, show the video, and send the MAGA-hatters somewhere else.

I am no fan of Trump. This post is political and has no place on FlightAware. And besides, it is just another bald-faced lie. The picture dates from 2004 and President George Bush. The Bush family, and most other past Presidents, did not make a habit of lying to the people, as does the current inhabitant of the White House. FlightAware should issue a retraction, and then let's all stick to technology and a celebration of aviation progress.

YOUR whole post is political!
Why did you even waste your time making POLITICAL comments, when you’re chastising everyone else for doing so?
WhiteKnight77
All politicians lie.

What? You know this isn't the first time af1 had done a flyover, right?

How repetitive! Someone above you already said this. TWICE. You sound like an old record stuck in the groove and spinning.....

Was this fly by, fly over even legal? Looks pretty low and close to buildings and people. Glad it worked out.

You've not been to a major sporting event in the 20 years have you?
fireftr
Exactly!!! Well stated

Donald J. Trump does not let laws bind him. He believes he is better than the rest of us and can do as he likes.

So, laws, regulations, guidelines — all in the trash can on AF1.
alexa320
You mean he likes being a dicktator?
Jaime1949
can some one please post a picture of air force one going by the King Richard Petty thank you
