AA Flight Attendant Has to be Restrained On-Board

Allegedly AA flight 2332 DFW-ORD had to return to the gate before takeoff, as a Flight Attendant had to be restrained after making several disturbing P/A announcements to the passengers. (blogs.dallasobserver.com) Altro...

I wish this lady well...we should all support her. AA is under some pressure and AA HR should be aware that stress levels may be high in the company. Things like this are rare but they should be fully understoud by HR and that department should have a srategy in place to support stsff who become ill. God speed to her recocery.
dbrooks84
Its been on CNN and other news networks. Looks like the flight attendant had a nervous breakdown. They got back to the gate and the entire flight attendant crew was replaced by AA before the flight continued. I would assume a lot of AA employees are worrying a lot about what is going to happen to them with AA in bankruptcy and an uncertain future.
Dubslow

If that video is anything to go by it's less of a nervous breakdown and more of a psychotic episode.

Regardless of the cause, and I'm not immune to the woman's plight, but there have quite a few airlines in bankruptcy, and employees remained professional. If this woman was so deeply affected with issues, she or her family / friends should have lent a hand and steered her into therapy. Companies all over the globe, not just airlines, are in trouble. Put on your big girl panties.

I'd go on a rant too if I had to go to ORD...

I would say ORD is not the worst, it has gotten much better. New york airports are more susceptible to chaos then Chicago, should have sent the F/A to Grand Cayman or something like that to give her a rest.

It sounds pretty legit as the Chicago Tribune reported she had not taken her meds. A couple of witnesses were quoted as saying the FA told them she was bipolar.

I wonder if that was the AA FA I had 5 years ago. Wouldn't be surprised.

I think she must get around a lot because I swear I've had her on a bunch of different flights on a bunch of different airlines.

"We don't have Coke, we have Pepsi, weren't you listening?!"
mhlansdell00
@ Julia and Jack:
It's my opinion that it all come down to the manager, dispatcher what ever term you want to use. Some of these folks aren't fit to fly as crew. You might be catching them at the end of their allowable hours period , maybe they have just been doingbthe same thing for too long. What ever the situation the call must be made to keep them away from contact with the customer/passengers. The only thing the airlines have to sell is customer service and anyone who can't properly interact with the customer shouldn't be allowed to especially in the close quaters of an airplane. "Go home and get your head right before you come back."
jmedina94
Lol. Once on an American Eagle flight someone asked the FA when we were taking off since we were already late. The FA stuck her hand in the air and walked away. Great service!
JD345
JD345 3
The quote there is from an MSP-LAS flight circa 2002 on NWA... I asked for a Coke and she scolded me with that. She was NOT kidding in the least.

That was even worse than getting eyed up by a Delta FA a few years ago. He... oh, you know where I'm going with this.
jmedina94
Lol. Even though airlines like Virgin America seem like they have the best service we had a pretty rude FA last year. You could tell she didn't really like her job.

I could see how being an FA would get tiring after a while though.
JD345
JD345 2
Conversely, US Airways seems to have a lousy reputation but I flew them back in December and and I was pretty impressed. Listening in on a convo between the lead FA and the gate agent... I would guess they were both 20 year veteran types and they sure seemed to enjoy what they did. I guess it's a lot easier to remember the one unpleasant FA over the majority of them that do their jobs just fine... and I'd say the average FlightAware commenter is paying a lot more attention than the typical customer would.

Anybody who has a job where you get exposed to the general public on a regular basis knows that there's a lot of idiots out there, and dealing with them day in and day out is going to wear some people down.
jmedina94
I hear bad things about US Airways but am flying them in about a month. Hopefully I have a similar experience to you. Going back I will be on a SkyWest CRJ-200. I haven't flown in one of those things in years so that will be weird.
JD345
JD345 2
Based on the rep I was reticent about even booking with them, but the times and the price and the ability to bump up to 1st aligned correctly so I went for it, and I'd do it again without hesitation.

I flew SkyWest from SLC-BUR back in December and the lead FA was a perfect 10 if that helps. Landing in a CRJ with 50+ MPH winds was a bit of an adventure, too.
jmedina94
US Airways price caught my attention. If I recall it was even cheaper than SWA.

I've heard good things about SkyWest. That's why I am looking forward to the return flight with them. They seem like the best out of all the regionals.
mhlansdell00
It's not the wind speed that bothers me so much as the direction with respect to the runway heading. Cross wind landings with high speed wind makes me unhappy.
rick737
Back in the day when I ruled with an iron fist from the left seat, I would hear FA's complain about the passengers. I would usually let it go. But when it got too severe, I would say "being a flight attendant would be a great job if it wasn't for all the f##K**g passengers." As soon as they figured out the point I was trying to make, they normally shut up. That didn't happen very often. Most of them are the best.
makfan
Yeah,I think it's easy to forget that point. Working with the public is no picnic, and for some reason it seems like flyers put their manners in their checked luggage too often. But still, professional is necessary.
makfan
I'm sure we tend to remember bad experiences more than good ones. How many times do we complain about the two-hour weather delay followed by a missed connection and an hour on hold? But what about the 20 other trips that went off without a hitch?

I fly AA a lot and mostly get good service. I am a top tier passenger, which certainly helps, but a hello, please and thank you go a long way.
jmedina94
After that experience I said I am NEVER flying AA again! Strangely enough the FA on the way back was the complete opposite. Nicest FA I've ever seen. Of course she was like 40 years younger.

Reading these posts, especially some of the last ones, gives a chuckle, but seriously, the Cabin Crew announces that a major part of their duty is pax safety. In Industry, safety sensitive jobs require drug and alcohol tests to insure a system of random monitoring....for the sake of public safety. Why shouldn't the FAs be in the same sort of random pools, have to take phsicals where certain medical condx such as Bi Polar disorder would disqualify them for flight?

I do not know details of this story , but I have personally witnessed passengers insulted by extremely aggressive hostile AA cabin staff. The attitude is hard to comprehend ! don't these idiots realize the flying public are CUSTOMERS.

I am surprised either FAA Rules or AA Policy didn't require an equipment change after an episode like this. Additionally, I am curious if some passengers elected to skip the flight altogether.

Why would anybody do either of those things?
billykid05
billykid05 2
Well what if the attendant wasn't as psychotic as she appeared and new something about the plane but couldn't convince others. What about the passengers now freaked out about flying after an attendant is saying the plane will crash, perhaps an equipment change would settle some nerves What if the attendant HAD planted a device but changed her mind...just to think of a few...
JD345
JD345 2
What if there was a bunch of hijackers on the plane who hijacked it and had a bunch of nerve gas stored in the cargo and rigged it to blow up when the plane got to the east coast and then they had to send Kurt Russell in another plane to dock with it and secretly get on board and try to take the plane back and defuse the nerve gas bomb?

Oh, wait, that's the plot to Executive Decision. Never mind.
billykid05
billykid05 4
There you go...now your thinking outside the box! Which is what I want someone to do when someone who represents control, authority, i.e. flight attendants announces on the PA sysytem that the plane is going to crash. Not a typical event is it? I want all the basis covered before we go up in the air.

Your example couldn't be better cause Halle Berry was the flight attendant in ED and if Halle goes on a rant about the plane crashing, I'm taking Halle and myself off the plane, booking two seats to Anguilla and comfort poor Halle till she recoups --- all the while laughing at people who think inside boxes.

No idea what point you're trying to make.
mhlansdell00
Freedom of the press refers to freedom from government reprisal ie the First aAmmendment of the Bill of Rigts not criticism by the citizenry. Editorializing the news is unacceptable to me and should be to you. There is a place for editorials but it's not page one.
AWAAlum
AWAAlum 1
That's exactly why cities typically have at least two newspapers, each one with their own views of an issue. Not only is there a place for editorializing, but it's a necessity in assisting people to view an issue from both sides. Are you opposed to any opinion other than your own? Read all the issues and then make up your own mind which you believe in. You're giving me the idea that everything in your life is your way or the highway.
mhlansdell00
WE have different views certainly. I have viewed the news pages as just that. the editorial pages are clearly labeled as editorial. When I read of an Air France airplane falling out of the sky I don't expect to read the authors opinion of whether or not the PIC should have been taking a nap. In that regard it's my way or the highway. If I don't like the way you write and I bought a news paper I have the right to complain. The Government does not.
AWAAlum
AWAAlum 1
PS @ Mark Lansdell - It's entirely inappropriate for you to tell me what should be unacceptable to me. I live in a Democracy. You would be far more comfortable living in a Dictatorship - with you obviously, the Dictator.

I think all he means is that news papers should report the news in the news section. Save the opinion for the editorial section. Opinions are like you know what and everybody has one.lol
AWAAlum
AWAAlum 1
I understand his intent, James. Newspapers since the beginning of time have had not only the right but the obligation to report an issue from its point of view. It's almost impossible to write without inserting one slant or another. We are intelligent enough to read both sides of an issue and decide for ourselves which we believe to be the right way. Personally, I find it stimulating to have a devil's advocate present. It makes one think about the issue from different perspectives - which I believe is healthy. Not everyone does. But I don't call them wrong for their preference. It's their right.
WALLACE24
WALLACE24 1
I'm not adverse to opinion and getting different sides to a story. That is when I read editorials or watch O'reilly or others. But when I want the news, that is all I want. Tell me what happend (just the facts maam). And usually when it is real news the facts are few and an opinion would be dramatizing at that point.
AWAAlum
AWAAlum 1
So your point is your preference to where you read the other side of the story. This is getting pretty silly.

Where you work is still voluntary. Pay and pressure are no excuse. If you don't like where you work go somewhere else. Management should have picked up on the problem. The management is not responsible for mental illness or breakdowns. Scheduling trips? Yes. Perhaps she should not have been scheduled that day. It's time we get a look at management. Who is allowing these flawed individuals to operate aircraft. As a trucking manager I spent many hours on first shift, 0300 start time, making sure the operators were fit to drive. Who had a fight with his wife that morning? who didn't sleep? Who was hung over? Who was sill drunk? I've read stories of pilots flying airplanes with hundreds of people on board, showing up for work legally drunk. The last I heard about was reported by a cabbie only a month ago. Management needs to stop manipulating and start managing.
AWAAlum
AWAAlum 1
Well, I for one am glad it was a FA and not the Captain or First Officer.
mhlansdell00
Pilots and first officers have to go through a physical exam I'm not sure the cabin crew does.
AWAAlum
AWAAlum 1
They do, but why not the FAs? They have the ability to cause just as much damage. They DO enter the flight deck, don't they.
mhlansdell00
I think you're saying you believe that FAs should get flight physicals as well and I agree, but with different criterion. I'm not sure it matters if an FA is color blind as much as it does a pilot, but maybe bipolar desease should be a disqualifier for airplane cabin work. She has to supervise behavior in an emergency not be supervised. Suppose she had been one of the FAs on the Cactus flight thet ditched in the Hudson River. Instead of being part of the solution she would be part of the problem.
mhlansdell00
"Flight 2332, scheduled to take off for Chicago at 8:25 a.m., was back at the gate by 9:15." I'd like to hear more onn why the 911 operator did not respond and why the police took over 45 min. to get there. Maybe the article was just poorly written, but that's the impression I'm left with.
Good luck to the FA. Perhaps FAs should go through periodic physicals like the front end crew does or do they already.
ARUNK
I lay this whole mess we now call 'air travel' right at the feet of the Jimbo Carter administration. Does anyone remember when there were no baggage, pillow, or blanket fees? Does anyone remember great airline service with lots of major airlines competing for your business with comfortable aircraft and cheerful crews? Does anyone remember when there was plenty of capacity and airlines tried to get you there the same day if there was a delay?

We are living with the pitfalls of airline deregulation. Major air carriers went out of business. Many airline employees lost their jobs or had their pay drastically cut. Pensions were lost or severly reduced because of airline bankruptcies.

There was a day when the airline took care of delayed passengers. Thanks to the passion of Jimmy Carter's administration to make flying more affordable through increasing airline competition by deregulating the industry, we now have this debacle we call 'air travel.'

'Cracker' Jimmy should have stayed away from the airline industry. If he had, we would all be happier fliers today. P.S. I spent an entire career with a major airline...so I know whereof I speak!!

Deregulation of the late '70's took the government's nose OUT of much of the business. Prices fell by huge amounts, new carriers sprang up, and zillions more people flew, making it much more messy. The airlines themselves had been pushing for deregulation for years.

Careful what you wish for.

You are definitely right about dereg. And while I think Carter was the second worst pres. in modern history, dereg was probably inevitable. Truck drivers used to wear uniforms with ties and made money almost like pilots. Gone, gone. Airline travel was not for the masses and everybody didn't expect their freight to be delivered overnite back then. Better? Depends on who you ask. I am not so fond of the way the country operates now. But I am glad to still be kicking.

If deregulation is truly the fault of all airline problems, as many here appear to believe, then why isn't something done about it? If deregulation can be done, why can't it be undone? (Serious question - I'm not being flip. I don't know what the fallout of that would be.) I do know this - airfares were WAY higher prior to deregulation - only the wealthier people flew - and they dressed up as though it were an event.

To "make flying more affordable" is nice, though. I've certainly traveled more in the past 10 years than I could have with pre-1978 fares.

And commuter flights -- as much as I hate them -- were few and far between back then.

There's always business class if you don't like steerage.
mhlansdell00
It's unclear where this FA was stationed. The article said forward so it may have been in business class. The fact remains flight crew should all have minimum medical criterion to be satisfied. I don't know that FAs have to pass a periodic physical or not.
