Windshear: AA1581 hit runway lights on go around after hard landing

Aggiunto

With much attention to air tankers in the West, we seem to have missed this item over the weekend. NTSB reported the aircraft reportedly encountered windshear on final approach, hit runway approach lights followed by a tail strike onto the runway surface. The crew initiated a go around and completed another landing. The aircraft sustained substantial damage. The flight data and cockpit voice recorders were taken to Washington for investigation by the NTSB. (avherald.com) Altro...

I am a tad confused by the AvHerald report. It speaks of 2 incidents, one last Saturday and one yesterday the 19th, yet NTSB is only opening investigation into the one on the 15th. What gives. Both show to be at CLT.

To boot, CBS is now reporting an A321 door off an AA flight that came off and landed on a CLT golf course.

The interviewee on the news is already angling for his settlement for the trauma of this thing hurtling from the sky and nearly killing him. Looked like a composite lav or hyd. service door that probably weighed less than the attaching hardware.

I guess that is a good reason not to play under an approach path. LOL

The incident of the 19th is the NTSB release of the report.

Sounds like it was almost a smackdown

One of the problems involved with windshear is its rarity in the severe form. I have encountered it so rarely in a 35 year career that only a couple of truly memorable events come to mind. In light of my observation and I'm sure others, wouldn't something like "windshear conditions exist" on the ATIS get pilots thinking that way. The meteorguessers are well aware of the common windshear clues and when a preponderance is evident give a shout out. The most startling aspect of it is it's subtlety and if the temp. dewpoint spread of 35 degrees doesn't get your attention, maybe the mention of windshear would! The mindset shouldn't change your approach, only the response time for the go-around.

Well ever since DAL 191, DFW has been equipped. CLT is another trouble spot. It is amazing to me that there are some young guns flying around out there that have never known a world without Doppler. I personally think your idea on the ATIS is a good one, to at least start somebody thinking that way and then hopefully all clear by the time they get there. As you say, at least get them in the mindset.
