New York (AFP) - Delta Air Lines plans to cancel orders for 60 new planes after company pilots last week voted down a new three-year labor contract, the company's chief executive said Wednesday. "Those orders will be canceled," said Delta chief executive Richard Anderson in response to a question on a conference call on the US carrier's second-quarter results. (news.yahoo.com) Altro...

Man! More "jets for jobs" tactics by an airline in contract negotiations. You'd think airlines could learn a different tune to play.

Can somebody tell me what pilots not signing a labor contract and cancelling aircraft orders have to do with each other. Am I missing something here?

The dog ate my homework(or insert any other bullsh@t excuse here). Not the first airline lately to delay or cancel orders. The suits believe that the long term outlook for the industry is not as rosy as they first thought. Just trying to make the pilots look like the bad guys.

Makes the planes more expensive to operate? I thought the contract would reduce the pay scale for the 737-900 pilots to be same as -800. While the changes for E-190 would make work rules to allow for over-night stays with a quick turn without having a second crew pick up the flight for the early morning go. I do not remember where I was reading this, could not find the link again.

Make the pilots the bad guys, just makes me wonder about DAL's bottom line. How much debt are they carrying forward.

This won't be the end of this story. This is just the beginning!

Delta is a company that gets there way and they do not care... The only thing they care about is the bottom dollar.

Delta cutting off their nose to spite their face. No matter what contract the pilots have, the airline still has to sell and move seats to remain in business. They must try to lower the cost per seat mile and while the pilots were to be part of that reduction, the airline should have been able to get the most savings from more efficient aircraft. Now they are in the position of hoping fuel prices remain low and if they need to expand they can bring 76's and 75's out of the desert. On the other hand if fuel prices go up, that solution is lost and they will be at a great disadvantage to the airlines that replaced their capital.

Airlines buy fuel years in advance.

Agree, but only so far as few of the sellers are willing to gamble too far out for they may end up as the losers on the hedge. They are looking at predictions of price trends too. Delta is now a little different for at least in the Eastern region they have become their own middleman with the purchase of the refinery and they have only to bet on the price of crude not the refined product.
