Spanish airline Spanair runs out of funds, to cease operating

Aggiunto
MADRID — Officials in Spain say struggling airline Spanair will cease operations because a regional government can no longer supply it with funds. Spanair’s financial woes were exacerbated by a 2008 crash that killed 154 people. Eighteen people survived what was Spain’s worst aviation disaster in 25 years. (www.washingtonpost.com) Altro...

I wonder what will happen to Star Alliance?

Wow read some of these messages, my worry is not if the airline will go broke, but if one of the people who write this crap maybe flying my wife and me some where

I can't swim

It is really a shame that more Spainish jobs are going down the drain. their unemployment rate now is ridculous and getting worst. Hopefully the other airlines will be able to pick up some of the layed off people.

Daniel thanks for your comments. I think they tried to do their best with the infrastructure they had. It was classy that they served you a mamosa so near the end. Please disregard the newbies comments as he doesn't quite get it yet. Here's hoping.

Spanish newspapers were reporting that even before the MD-80 terrible accident in Madrid Barajas airport (150 dead) this airline was losing money heavily and its main shareholders SAS from Sweden decided to quit and ownership/control passed to the Catalunyan Sectional Government who subbornly kept it flying since but last week they decided to plug the hemorrage, all in line with the very stern directives from the European Union to the Spanish Government: you manage all budget appropriations wisely or else (no more bailout money.
Jetson1
lol Josh, you owe money to that cartoonist now...yes, you even have to pay for reproducing the cartoons that are lame.
JReinertsen
Here's to you having a better day tomorrow mark. http://www.cartoonstock.com/lowres/dro0502l.jpg

I enjoyed this story about the airline and everybody's comments except those of Mark Jetson.
JReinertsen
Hmmm, oddly mr. Jetson I don't see where you're coming from in regards to Dans original comments. IMO, He was simply stating that the airline continued to run with the same customer service and gratitude as it had when its outlook wasn't so dark.

Unless irlines really get down to providing an ejoyable and safe experience instead of gauging people and nickle and diming them to death--THEY TOO WILL FAIL>

The airline was nearly 30 years old -- although I've never flown them, I did spent a few hours in their Barcelona lounge on New Years Day 2012 and it was business as usual as they served mimosas. Very nice place.
Jetson1
Daniel, your tale of sipping mimosas in BCN was so insightful and gripping. Who really gives a shit about a company that went out of business, or all the travelers that may have lost money already spent on airline tickets, OR any of the thousands of employees who lost their jobs? Great story...
canuck44
There is now lots of competition now particularly from Vueling which merged with Clickair. The quadrangle of BCN, MAD, Valencia and Palma Mallorca is absolutlely cutthroat for the Spanish airlines. Where competition exists, Iberia or its regional affiliate Air Nostrum are there to compete as well. Air Europa has bled off many of the longer flights to the Canary Islands.

Spanair had a very mixed fleet with few aircraft in their first decade of service. They tried all kinds of different combinations to find a market niche but always placed second or third or lower. The combination of low margins, old capital and lots of competition just killed off the low man on the totem pole to the surprise of none.

How much you or your host had to pay for the darn mimosa. I few weeks ago I flew with them Madrid to Bilbao and back same day Economy class cahrging Euros 780.oo for the ticket (expensive beyond believe!!!) and to top things off Euros 15.oo for a stale cheese sandwich and a bit warm coke. No. Daniel, in 30 years they did not get it. Too bad for the thousands of employees losing their jobs, pensions, etc.
Jetson1
Right on Paul, you are the only person in this thread that gets "it".
jkudlick
I'm pretty sure Star Alliance will carry on just fine.
jkudlick
All he did was provide a link to where the image was hosted. Had he actually reproduced it, then he would owe royalties. Please take your ignorance and crawl back into your hole.
Jetson1
wow, you said it girlfriend! And what's this? Joshua can't swim?? ! Oh the humanity....
Jetson1
No, i "get it" Chris... but obviously you don't. This wasn't an article comparing airline lounges from around the world, it was an article about a company mismanaged and going out of business and employees losing their jobs in a fragile economy. And the first comment was basically "look at me, look what I drink at exotic locales on important holidays"...ugh.

Your defense of Daniel just shows that you swim in the shallow end of the pool with him.
Jetson1
No, he was bragging about drinking a mimosa on NYE in a fancy airline lounge. Odd that you would support Daniels comments when the only real information he had on Spanair was that they were in business for 30 years.
Jetson1
Oh Charles, as it turns out, no one is interested if you are enjoying the comments of others. Now go have a drink and think about what a waste of time YOUR comment was.

The insight that you seem oblivious to is my point that even in the last few weeks, they spared no expense while on the verge of financial collapse.
Jetson1
Joshie, get water wings

Hey Mark, next time try to click "Reply" under the comment you're responding to so people understand what incited you to make a fool of yourself.
falcon2000driver
Mark,if i saw you in person i would drop you off in the dumpster in a bag
StymieHo
There. That wasn't so hard was it? You can actually post something on here with out insulting anyone. Tomorrow, let's try putting on some big boy underwear and hopefully you won't have any accidents.
Jetson1
Yes Ethan, and if Jeremy is sure about something you can take that to the bank!
Jetson1
lol, whoa Jeremy, time to take your meds dude. Obviously you don't have a "sense" of humor...the question really is do you have a sense of anything?
RRKen

Bragging? I dare not mention all the fine meals I have had in exotic places lest I too become a target of resentment.
Jetson1
Oh hey Chipsters! Are you a soul-less tool too? Wow, I hit the jackpot! Have a drink buddy, you need it.
avsgman
Sorry Mark clearly you don't. He was expressing his opinion and experience with an unfortunate airline that didn't make it. That you can get fired up or resentful of him for that demonstrates clearly...you don't get it. He has every right to comment specifically on his interaction with the subject in question just as you have the right to your own opinion. I like his opinion better :) and have now voiced my own opinion. b.t.w. where I swim shouldn't matter.
Jetson1
Well, if they were in business for 30 years, they must have done something right. You observations might have had some validity if you had had more contact with the airline other than just sipping mimosas in their lounge once. It's a seriously sad story about Spanair, and your original comment seems to show an entitled pilot, traveling the world to exotic destinations, drinking in the finest airport lounges...really? Are you tooting your own horn? No wonder the rest of the world hates US.
Jetson1
....as you can see, chrissy still doesn't get it. That's gotta sting his mommy and daddy just knowing his IQ and shoe are about the same. Here's hoping you wear size 12 lil' C !!
Jetson1
vacous
bigjulie
Yeah, have yourself a mimosa. LOL
StymieHo
I've digested you shit long enough to determine you are a bona-fide dickhead. Congrats... It only took one thread of comments.
falcon2000driver
Just kiddin, wouldnt do that to you man, enjoying the entertainment
Jetson1
Who said anything about limiting his rights or opinions? All I did was respond to him to him with a sarcastic quip. Then he started with name calling....So now, who is getting fired up? Talk about deflecting, classic. And if you don't think it matters what end of the pool you swim in, then that speaks volumes.
Jetson1
you digest shit? Whoa man, that took some serious raisins for you to admit that here online!
StymieHo
I had a $7 Sprite in the terminal at Helsinki once.... How bout that Jetson?
Jetson1
wow, falcon....check your meds there buddy, you're see-sawing like a 4th grader on adderall
Jetson1
boring chrissy, sounds like something a tool would say
StymieHo
You still here Pig Vomit?
falcon2000driver
Sorry dude ,just bored
StymieHo
Nice comeback. Original. This thread is tired. Let's move the grunt-slinging to a more recent topic.
Jetson1
lol, good one chrissy! Nothing like reaching back to your hero howard stern's movie for an insult! Genius!
Jetson1
the SAG Awards are on TBS...how could you be bored??
StymieHo
Eh, you remind me of him... Pig Vomit, not Stern.
JetsonMarks
well you remind me of the vomit that a pig would make if he had an upset stomach.
Jetson1
You know who is really bored...just check Ethan's contribution this thread. Wow, really? You wonder what happened to Star Alliance? OMG...
carvandog
And you wonder why people wanted you to be on the SpanAir crash in 2008.
Jetson1
dumb, really dumb
carvandog
Ok. But one thing. are you rlated to the Jetsons?
JetsonMarks
yes
