United Airlines reveals 10 new routes, including two new destinations

United Airlines is adding 10 new routes from five of its hub airports, including flights to two cities it does not currently serve: Elmira, N.Y., and Wilmington, N.C.

The new service comes as United looks to solidify its network by increasing connecting opportunities at its hub airports. (Scroll down for full schedule details)

As part of that, United said it is adjusting the times of its arriving and departing “banks” of flights at Chicago O’Hare. United, which has already implemented a similar change at its Houston hub, said the change will both shorten customers’ connection times and increase the number of connecting flights in its schedule.

As for the new service, three of United's new routes will come from O'Hare. Twice-daily flights to Wilmington and El Paso begin April 9 while a seasonal once-daily route to Fresno begins June 7.

United is adding four routes from its hub in Los Angeles. Two of those will be year-round, with twice-daily service to the Oregon cities of Medford and Redmond starting April 9. To the Montana cities of Kalispell and Missoula, a seasonal schedule featuring one daily round-trip flight begins June 7.

Elsewhere, United will add two daily round-trip flights between Newark Liberty and Elmira; two daily round-trip flights between Washington Dulles and Wilmington; and one daily round-trip flight between Denver and Jacksonville, Fla. All of those routes launch April 9.

"We continue to focus on making United the first choice for customers when planning their domestic and international travel," Grant Whitney, United's VP of Domestic Network Planning, said in a statement. "Our new daily services connect customers to important business markets and our new seasonal summer routes provide more customers with convenient access to enjoy our National Parks."

For the two cities that will be joining United’s route map, officials welcomed the news.

“We’re ecstatic,” Wilmington International Airport deputy director Gary Broughton said to the Wilmington Star News about landing flights to both Chicago and Washington on United. “For years we’ve been trying to get another airline in here and now to get nonstop service to two destinations is just fantastic.”

In western New York state, United’s decision to add flights to the Elmira Corning Regional Airport came less than two years after it pulled out of the airport, ending its service to Chicago O’Hare in April 2016. Now, when it returns, United will instead be flying to its hub in Newark. (Archives: United Airlines dropping Elmira, N.Y., from its route map)

“Newark is a terrific hub with many places to go,” Tom Santulli, the top executive of the local Chemung County, said to The Steuben Courier Advocate newspaper of western New York. “It really is a great upgrade.”

United’s exit from the Elmira Corning airport in 2016 was compounded locally when another airline – American – followed shortly thereafter with its own plan to leave. When American discontinued its Elmira flights earlier this year, that left the airport with just two carriers: Delta and Allegiant.

“We promised the community this when we lost American, and when we lost Philadelphia, that we were going to come with another hub, and I believe that the hub we have now with Newark is about as good as it gets," Santulli added to the Courier Advocate.
